The Internship:
SMART office interns provide substantive support for SMART’s operations in various departments while gaining valuable on-the-job training and experience to complement a college or university curriculum. This is an unpaid internship, which may count for college credit as the university or college allows.

-Write and edit short articles for SMART’s website
-Perform internet research related to education and literacy development
-Use WordPress to post content
-Other projects as assigned, potentially including social media, event planning/promotion, media relations, internal communications, volunteer recruitment

-Enhance SMART’s ability to continually improve and expand its program to serve more local children with reading support and books to keep.
-Contribute to the vitality of the community’s future work force by creating stronger, more confident readers today.
-Help inspire a lifelong love of reading and learning in local children.

Desired Qualifications and Skills:
-Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively; open to feedback and supervision
-Strong writing and proofreading skills
-Excellent internet research skills
-Ability to learn basic features of WordPress
-Must pass a criminal history check and sign a confidentiality agreement
-Must be dependable and available on a consistent basis
-Strong interest in advancing equity in education and Oregon communities

-Gain hands-on experience in nonprofit operations and communications/marketing
-Get practical experience in the day-to-day activities of a dynamic nonprofit organization, while learning about early childhood education and volunteer relations
-Develop skills in computer applications including WordPress
-Gain professional contacts that will support search for gainful employment
-Become part of the solution to help children develop skills for success in school and life
-Receive initial and ongoing training on the SMART program and position-specific training

-4-8 hours per week (hours are flexible during Mon-Fri 9am-5pm), for approximately 2-4 months

Training and Orientation:
Training and orientation is provided for SMART interns prior to beginning their role. This training includes information about the SMART program and job-specific training as defined by the position supervisor.
