Closing Date: open until filled
Industry: Education, Nonprofit, Social Services
Type: Part Time

Description:
The Oregon Humanities team is a small group of idealistic, collaborative, creative people who are committed to bringing Oregonians together across differences, beliefs, and backgrounds. Each year, we offer hundreds of public conversations and programs across the state and tens of thousands of dollars in grants to organizations that, like us, believe in the power of people in rooms listening, learning, and struggling together. In our magazine and on our website, we publish essays, photographs, films, and audio recordings that explore the thoughts, perspectives, and experiences of Oregonians, especially those who have been ignored, generalized, or oppressed.

We’re looking for an intern to join us as a classroom assistant for Humanity in Perspective (HIP) for the 2017–18 school year, ten to twelve hours per week, Monday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. from late August until early May. Classes are held at our downtown location, easily accessible by public transportation. This internship is available as a federal work-study position or paid a $1,000 stipend. The position is also eligible for an additional public transportation stipend.

Humanity in Perspective is a free college-level humanities course for adults who live on low incomes in Portland. HIP has been a successful, innovative partnership between Oregon Humanities and local colleges and universities for the past sixteen years and has provided more than 300 Portland residents the chance to study the humanities and earn free, transferrable college credit. HIP provides adults facing barriers to education an opportunity to engage in collective inquiry and reflect on ideas of power and justice through a supportive learning community.

The HIP classroom assistant is imaginative and creative, willing to complete administrative tasks, and able to work with students who have a variety of skills and needs. The assistant has excellent written and oral communication skills, is detail-oriented, and is willing and able to work independently and on long- and short-term projects.

Duties include the following:
• Attend HIP class two evenings per week at the Oregon Humanities office in downtown Portland
• Take class minutes and send them to students after each class
• Meet with students before class to assist with study skills, writing challenges, and meeting their learning goals
• Assist HIP faculty with in-class assignments
• Support activities such as materials development, event planning, and ticket donations
• Assist HIP course coordinator with administrative duties

Qualifications
• College senior, or master’s candidate
• Experience as a writing or learning tutor
• Experience/interest in working with low-income populations or students who face barriers to learning
• Interest in teaching, student services, community education, or social service

Oregon Humanities values equity, justice, empathy, and respect as key attributes of vital, flourishing communities. We encourage applications from candidates with diverse backgrounds, particularly those from historically underrepresented groups, whose professional and personal experiences will help us work toward our vision of an Oregon that invites diverse perspectives, explores challenging questions, and strives for just communities.
