Hike it Baby is a new Portland, Oregon, based non-profit 501(c)(3) community driven organization dedicated to getting families outside with children from birth to school age. Our purpose is to provide support to get families in nature as soon as they feel ready. We are dedicated to raising a generation to love the outdoors.

Hike it Baby started in July of 2013, when Founder Shanti Hodges invited a few other new families to join her for a hike. In the first few months these were casual hikes among friends. As the number of families participating grew, it became apparent that the desire to get outside was much more than Shanti expected. Through the help of an ever increasing group of hosts and volunteers, Hike it Baby grew from a small group of parents to a large community of families.

There are currently over 300 Hike it Baby branches comprised of nearly 180,000 families. We’ve seen the number of monthly hikes grow from a dozen, to a hundred, to now over 5,000 hikes annually across North America.

The Opportunity: Hike it Baby is at a pivotal point in its development. We are growing exponentially and trying to create an organization that will be sustainable for future generations. In working towards this goal, we are looking for new members to join our Board of Directors. Hike it Baby is specifically looking for applicants with expertise in web development, organizational development, and non-profit funding.

Rather than operating as a traditional fundraising/philanthropic Board, Hike it Baby is looking for Board members who can function as organization leaders. We need your vision, knowledge, experience, and guidance to help Hike it Baby manage its unprecedented growth and unlimited opportunities.

Board members are expected to serve up to three consecutive two-year terms in which they will be responsible for attending monthly board meetings, the majority of which will be teleconference. We expect board members to take initiative and advise on various leadership roles as the organization’s structure becomes more developed.
